IRSD students earn honors at Sussex County Science Fair in Lewes

Six Indian River School District students were honored at the Sussex County Science Fair on March 8 at the Biden Center in Lewes.

Students from Indian River High School, Sussex Central High School and Georgetown Middle School earned one first-place, two second-place, two third-place and four special awards at the fair. Winners were as follows:

Grade 9
• Jacob Martin (IRHS), Second Place, Wind Energy
• Seth Furbush (IRHS), Third Place, Which Light is Best for Plant Growth?

Grade 10
• Kourtney Bastianelli (SCHS), First Place, Sucrose: Lactic Acid Production in Kimchi
• Jane Saunders (IRHS), Second Place, Mud Power
• Sara Westhafer (IRHS), Third place, From Murky to Clean

In addition, Martin and Westhafer received special awards from the American Association of University Women. Westhafer also received a special award from the Center for the Inland Bays. Seventh-grader Ashley Baker of Georgetown Middle School received a special award from Tidewater Utilities, Inc.

Martin, Furbush, Bastianelli, Saunders and Westhafer qualified for the Delaware Valley Science Fair, which attracts students from Delaware, Eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. The fair will be held April 6-8 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pa.
