Wes Townsend, of Selbyville, will be inducted into the Delaware Basketball Hall of Fame by the Delaware Interscholastic Basketball Association on Saturday, March 20.

Townsend was named to the first team All-State Basketball Team in 1977 and 1978, after being a third-team pick as a sophomore in 1976 at Indian River High School. He led Indian River to a state title in 1978 and to four Henlopen South titles.

His 1,821 career points were a state record that lasted 10 years until Dexter Boney of Brandywine broke it and was the Henlopen Conference standard until Brian Polk, of Sussex Tech, surpassed it in 2000. Townsend averaged more than 12 points per game as a three-year starter at Delaware State where he was team MVP as a senior.

Townsend was an assistant coach at Delaware State and Indian River High School before becoming a referee. In his 15-year career, he refereed two state championship games. In 2001, Townsend returned to coaching and is now the girls' varsity basketball coach at Sussex Tech.

Other 2010 inductees are Albert Horne, Sarah Gause, Laron Profit, Lovett Purnell, Penny Welsh, Pat Borowski and Loretta Ianni.
