Both Sussex Central's baseball and softball teams lived to see another day with state tournament wins over Milford and Caesar Rodney, respectively, on Wednesday.
Central baseball needed just five innings of work to best the Buccaneers 12-0. Junior pitcher Trevor Wilkins went the distance for the Golden Knights on the hill, surrendering just three hits while striking out five.
Senior catcher Matt Eskridge led the way at the dish for Central, as he went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI.
Tomorrow the No. 3 Knights will host No. 11 A.I. du Pont, which upset No. 6 Newark 6-5, in a second round contest slated for 4 p.m.
Tech baseball too won in a mercy rule-shortened game, as the No. 8 Ravens needed six innings to best No. 9 Dickinson 11-1. The win was the first baseball playoff victory in school history.
The Ravens used home runs by Steve Sharff, Seth Hastings and Chad Sturgeon to power their offense.
Next up for Tech is tomorrow's second round bout at No. 1 Middletown.
Over on the softball diamond, the No. 3 Lady Knights of Central needed extra innings to knock off rival Caesar Rodney 2-1 and advance to a semifinal game tomorrow at Tech at 5 p.m.
Opposing the Knights is No. 10 Milford, which upset the No. 2 seed Lady Ravens 2-1 after plating a pair of scores in the top half of the sixth inning and then holding on for a victory.
