Ever since the Senior League Softball World Series came to the Lower Sussex Little League Complex, it has been a well-known fact that the host team should not be overlooked.
Of the seven seasons Roxana has hosted the event, six times the District III squad has been Laurel, including this year.
Only, this team has been overlooked by some because of its youth, and manager Kenny Willey could not be happier.
“We like being the underdog,” Willey said of his All-Stars. “It let’s us catch teams off guard.”
Or at least it let the Laurel girls catch one off guard, the US East representative from Haverstraw, N.Y., in the Series pool play opener.
After the host squad earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over East, however, it is unlikely many will overlook this year’s club again.
Next up for Laurel is game two of pool play, which is set for Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 5:30 p.m. versus EMEA.
