A pair of Indian River soccer players recently achieved school history, and five more announced their collegiate choices last week.
Seniors Caitlin Forte and Victor Aguilar were respectively named to the girls and boys regional All-American teams, both firsts for any sports in Indian River history.
“This is a unique honor, and it’s voted on by coaches,” IR head coach Steve Kilby said. “It shows the efforts of their hard work and dedication to IR soccer.”
Forte, who was also named Delaware’s Gatorade Player of the Year for girls soccer later in the week, will play soccer at Villanova next year. She is a multiple All-Conference and All-State honoree.
“It’s an honor, especially because it is a first for the school,” Forte said of her All-American status. “All the hard work paid off.”
Aguilar, who is staying closer to home and playing soccer with Delaware Tech, echoed his classmate’s assessment of the All-American status. While he has not settled on a major yet nor decided if he will continue playing soccer after his two seasons at Delaware Tech, Aguilar is excited about playing at the next level.
“I’ll still be close to home but out of Sussex County,” Aguilar said of his decision to attend Delaware Tech. “I’ll get a technical education and go on from there.”
Education is the key for all IR athletes, Principal Mark Steele said, but added that gaining additional funding through athletics is always a bonus. The seven soccer players on hand announcing their intent to play at college – Aguilar, Forte, Holden Wingate, Nick Izzo, Ross Beauchamp, Emma Cannon and Marisa Atkins – Steele said, were indicative of the graduating senior class.
“Of about 190 students, 80 to 90 percent of them are going on to college,” Steele said. “This is the best senior class we have had here in terms of state testing. We’ll rely on them in the future to be leaders and role models for our younger students.”
