Sussex Tech and Sussex Central will begin state softball tournament play Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Lady Ravens, who won the Henlopen Conference and finished with a 16-2 record, are the tournament’s No. 2 seed and play host to No. 15 St. George’s. Central (14-4), the five-seed, hosts No. 12 A.I. DuPont.

If Tech wins it will square off with either No. 7 Wilmington Charter or No. 10 Smyrna, while the Lady Knights could face a rematch with No. 4 Delmar, a team that beat them in the regular season.

Indian River was the first team out of the tournament, as it finished with the 17th highest point index after struggling to a 9-9 record.

Defending champion Caravel, which bested both Tech and Central by one run during the regular season and did not lose to a Delaware team, is the top overall seed. The Lady Bucs will host No. 16 Appoquinimink. Archmere, favored by many before the season started to win the tournament, is the three-seed.

Eight of the 16 teams in the field are from the Henlopen Conference. Along with Tech, Central, Delmar and Smyrna, No. 8 Polytech, No. 9 Laurel, No. 13 Lake Forest and No. 14 Caesar Rodney all earned berths.

Second round tourney games are scheduled for May 31, third round June 2 and the championship falls on June 4.
