Sussex Central reached the semifinals of the state softball tournament Tuesday with a 6-4 victory over Delmar.
Sussex Tech, however, lost 5-3 in nine innings to Smyrna and saw its hopes for a state title end.
The No. 5 Lady Knights will square off with top-seed Caravel Thursday with a trip to the finals on the line. Caravel defeated Central 1-0 in a regular season game.
Against the Lady Wildcats, who bested the Knights 3-2 in the regular season, it was senior catcher Whitney Brittingham who did the most damage for Central at the dish with a grand slam in the top of the third. The blast put the Knights ahead 4-1 and they never relinquished the lead.
Sussex Tech, trailing 3-1 in the bottom half of the seventh with two outs, seemed to grab all the momentum back from No. 10 Smyrna when senior Kelsey Doherty blasted a two-run homer to left-center. Undauntedly, however, the Lady Eagles kept No. 2 Tech off the board in the eighth after going scoreless themselves and plated a pair in the ninth to secure the victory.
Smyrna will take on Padua Thursday in the other semifinal matchup.
