Few teams can top the successful history Georgetown rivals Sussex Central and Sussex Tech have on the softball diamond.
Between the two, Tech and Central have won three of the last six state softball championships and the with the exception of last season, one, the other or both have reached the final four during that timeframe.
Tuesday at Central, the two added another chapter to their rivalry in a nine-inning thriller that ended with Tech senior Kelsey Doherty’s bloop single that plated Cailey Isaacs for the game-winning score. Isaacs, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored from third on the bases loaded single.
The game, which could decide the Henlopen Conference champion (Tech is now 6-0 overall, 5-0 conference, while Central sits at 6-1, 5-1), could have ended in the bottom of the eighth when the Lady Knights had a runner on second, but Doherty went to her right and robbed what looked like a basehit to end the inning and keep the Lady Ravens alive.
Central scored first in the contest, as sophomore Katie Warrington drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of Tech winning pitcher Kim Smith, who went the distance. The Ravens, however, answered in the sixth with a pair of scores courtesy of a two-out Central error with the bases full.
Knights pitcher Kristen Cooper also tossed all nine innings of the bout and allowed just one earned while striking out 12.
