Recently graduated Sussex Tech senior Kelsey Doherty won’t be very far away from her old high school campus when she takes the diamond next season.
Doherty, who started all four years in the middle of the Lady Ravens infield and incredibly only made one error, is headed just up Route 113 to Dover. There, the perennial All-Conference and All-State honoree will continue playing softball at Delaware State University while majoring in education.
Although it might not be at second base – where she played all but six games at Tech – her former head coach, John Marvel, said he expects Doherty to start immediately for the Hornets.
“She can play pretty much every position, and I find it hard to believe [DSU] has seven better ballplayers than her,” Marvel said. “And she’s willing to play any of those positions.”
Doherty’s father, Dave, agreed with Marvel and recounted a story of his daughter in a similar circumstance at Tech.
“When she first got here, she heard they needed outfielders so that’s where she tried out,” Dave Doherty said. “Coach Marvel called me over one day and asked me ‘isn’t she an infielder.’ He moved her after that and that’s where she stayed, but she can play just about anywhere.”
After signing her letter of intent on June 15, Doherty took the time to answer some questions for the Sussex Countian.
Q You were a pretty good field hockey player, too. How hard was the decision to play softball in college?
A Not really hard, because I like hockey but softball is a bigger passion. I had a few colleges looking at me for hockey, but I knew I wanted to play softball.
Q You won two state championships in field hockey and played numerous tournament games in softball, what will be some of your memories of high school athletics?
A Winning those state titles was an amazing feeling, and I’ll always remember that in my last at bat in softball, I hit a home run. The game didn’t end the way we had hoped, but not many people can say they ended with a home run. (Doherty tied her team with Smyrna, 3-3 in the seventh inning of a state tournament game last month.)
Q Why Delaware State?
AI hoped to stay kind of close to home, like play for one of the MEAC schools, and Del State ended up being the one. It’s a Division I school, a nice campus and I like the coaches there.
Q Where do you expect to play at DSU?
AI’ll play anywhere they need me, but I really like the outfield. I enjoy catching fly balls instead of grounders.
Q Who would you say helped you get to this point with softball?
A There are a lot of people. My parents were always there, so were my coaches and teammates. A lot of people helped me.
