My husband is the “bouncee” of many of my ideas on how to make life easier at home. The latest was to get  the MasterPan, one single divided skillet that lets me cook five different things at once. My idea bouncing usually starts with “Hey, look at this!” and so did this one. I brought my iPad to his desk to show him this pan that’s divided into a configuration that let’s you cook  a bunch of things at the same time on one burner.

“You need that like you need a third head,” he said. I had to look up whether that was a real phrase and if so, what the heck it meant. It’s not a common phrase and it means nothing so on I pressed.

“Oh, we do need it,” I countered. “Hear me out. Every morning I make us breakfast and I use one pan to cook three things in succession. I finish the potatoes, then cook the eggs and If I want bacon, oh vegetarian, I have to cook that in a separate pan so your food doesn’t get ‘meat cooties’. This way, I can cook our eggs, potatoes and my bacon all in one fell swoop. I can even add your precious black beans with salsa or grilled tomatoes. And dare I say it? I like a pancake from time to time.”

I think he started to see my point, but I went on. “And what if you’re in the mood for fried eggs, and I want my scrambled eggs with cream cheese in them? What if it’s lunchtime and you want a Beyond Burger (it’s meatless and if you haven’t tried it, you must, even omnivores) and I want one made with Kobe beef (because I’m fancy that way)? We don’t want the meat juices messing with your vegan burger output.”

 He knew I was going to get one anyway so I really didn’t need to go through all of that.  Turns out, we did need it. I got the MasterPan for just over $40 and immediately set about cooking all our meals in it. It’s especially good for our morning ritual breakfast with home fries, eggs and beans but also for tacos because I can sautee up some peppers and onions, heat the corn tortillas and simmer up my al pastor all in one fell swoop and indeed, on one burger. You can also put it in the oven up to 350 degrees F for heating.

 

While it does heat using only one burner, I found that having two on worked a little better and the surface is indeed non-stick. One happy and unexpected byproduct of using this pan is that I’m only making enough food to fit into the segments so there’s inherent portion control going on.
