Incumbent Sussex County Councilman Vance Phillips of Laurel will face a Republican primary challenge Tuesday from real estate agent Rob Arlett of Frankford. The winner of the GOP primary will advance to face the winner of Tuesday’s Democratic primary between Dagsboro Mayor S. Bradley Connor and Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Bob Wheatley of Laurel.

Q Why are you running for Sussex County Council?

ARLETT Because I believe I can bring new energy and ideas to Sussex County’s 5th District. We have to work on economic development, encourage manufacturing to come to Sussex County and develop transparency of council funds. There are many initiatives to bring to western Sussex, which has been pretty much neglected by the current incumbent.

PHILLIPS Sussex County’s government needs strong conservative leadership and I have a proven track record of success.  Through hard work and dedication, I have faithfully served my constituents in the Fifth District.  When I serve others, I serve God and I look forward to every opportunity to help Sussex Countians.

Q Why should voters cast their ballot for you?

ARLETT Because voters can be assured I will be industrious, honest and bring new energy to the county. Otherwise, why would one go through this process? I give my solemn promise to work every day to improve the lives of the people in the 5th District and Sussex Council as a whole. We have a gem here in southern Delaware that needs to shine.

PHILLIPS Because I am the taxpayers’ best friend. This is not a hollow slogan, but a proven fact. For 16 years, I have placed the interests of you, the taxpayer, above that of the bureaucracy. If you believe you know how to spend your hard-earned money better than the government then I am the candidate you can count on to protect your wallet.

Q What promises are you willing to make to voters if you are elected?

ARLETT That I will be honest and straightforward with the constituents. that I will be responsive and responsible; I will be available and listen; and their taxes won’t be raised.

PHILLIPS I promise the same pledge I have kept for sixteen years and that is to never raise your taxes.
