The Delaware Department of Transportation announced that the state Route 1, Thompsonville Grade Separated Intersection and ramps are open to traffic.

This $11.5 million project included the creation of an overpass with on and off ramps for north and southbound traffic connecting with state Route 1 from Thompsonville Road. The project also extended Thompsonville Road to the intersection of Tub Mill Road and Church Hill Road.

The improvements allowed the removal of the existing traffic signal at the Thompsonville intersection and the removal of median crossovers in the immediate vicinity. The contractor for these improvements is Mumford & Miller Concrete Inc., based in Middletown.

The project, is part of DelDOT's long-term plan to improve safety and ease traffic congestion along the entire state Route 1 corridor from Dover to Lewes. Similar ongoing projects include improvements at state Route 1 and south Frederica and at state Route 1 and Little Heaven. The work at south Frederica is due for completion in spring 2018. The work at Little Heaven is due for completion in fall 2018.

The next related project to begin construction will be an interchange at state Route 1 and northeast Front Street, planned to start construction in fall 2017. In addition, a connector road will be constructed between northeast 10th Street and northeast Front Street to eliminate the grade crossover.

A community workshop to discuss preliminary plans for building an interchange at state Route 1 and state Route 16 will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at Eagles Nest Christian Academy, 26633 Zion Church Road, Milton. That project is tentatively planned to begin construction in spring 2020. The proposed plan includes removing the existing at-grade intersection and traffic signal at state Route 16/Broadkill Road and creating an overpass with access to state Route 1 via ramps. There will be signal improvements, signing and pavement marking improvements, and the installation of lighting at the intersection.
