Driver charged with DUI
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a serious crash that occurred in a Rehoboth Beach shopping center parking lot.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7, as a 50-year-old female from Greenbelt, Maryland, was operating a 2006 Toyota Camry in the dimly lit parking lot of the Safeway at 19266 Coastal Highway. She was attempting to make a left turn onto one of the access roads in order to exit the parking lot as a 72-year-old Rehoboth Beach male attempted to cross the same road on foot. The operator of the Camry failed to see the pedestrian, who was wearing a red raincoat, and struck him.
The operator of the Camry identified as Melissa F. Nearing. She was properly restrained, uninjured and remained on scene. After evidence revealed she was under the influence, a DUI investigation was initiated and she was subsequently charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
The pedestrian was initially transported by EMS to Beebe Medical center but later transferred to Christiana Hospital, where he is in critical condition.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Anyone with information pertaining to this crash is asked to contact Detective N. DeMalto at 302-703-3267.
