The Delaware Department of Transportation recently announced that their contractor Mumford & Miller Concrete Inc. will begin the improvements of the intersection of state Route 404/Seashore Highway and state Route 18/Cannon Road.

State Route 404/Seashore Highway will be widened with the installation of a left turn lane to improve safety and facilitate unobstructed through movements. State Route 18/Cannon Road will be widened to provide left and right turn lanes; an acceleration lane will be installed for the southeast movement onto state Route 404/Seashore Highway. In addition, bicycle facilities will be installed throughout the project limits.

This project is scheduled to begin Feb. 12 and is anticipated to be complete by mid-May, pending weather.

One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction using lane shifts. Daytime lane closures may occur from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. If necessary, the contractor may work Saturdays. Flaggers will be on-site to direct motorists during lane closure conditions. After April 30, daytime lane closures will not be permitted on state Route 404.

There will be two detours implemented to maintain traffic during construction. The first phase involves the closure of Sanfillippo Road at state Route 404/Seashore Highway in mid-February.

The second phase will involve the closure of state Route 18/Cannon Road at state Route 404/Seashore Highway in mid-March.
