The return of the Starboard Derby Run with broomstick horses, sponsored by Maker’s Mark, is set for 4 p.m. May 5 at The Starboard Restaurant, 2009 Highway One, Dewey Beach.
This year, The Starboard is commemorating one of their biggest fans, customer Matt Taylor, who they lost during the offseason. The staff of The Starboard has decided to use this event as a day to not only remember Taylor, but raise funds for the B+ Foundation in his name.
“Where else can you get dressed up and see a bunch of your friends hop on broomsticks and race around the block? It’s these types of events that Starboard fans love so much, and this is a great chance to enjoy the Kentucky Derby theme and all the vibes before the summer crowds roll in,” said owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery.
The pre-party begins at 4 p.m. The race will feature prizes including $500, $250 and $100 gift cards for first, second and third place.
The fundraising part of the afternoon in memory of Taylor, benefitting the B+ Foundation, will include auctions, T-shirt sales and online donation support.
In addition to fancy attire, the race and the mint juleps, The Starboard and folks at Maker’s Mark will be doing some giveaways, including the famous red-wax commemorative cups and shirts will be available for participants.
After the race, watch the Kentucky Derby on the 46 high definition televisions at The Starboard, followed by a free performance from one of Dewey Beach’s Kristen & The Noise.
Admission is free.
