The Seaford Middle School Builders Club recently raised $1,000 for the Allen Cancer Center at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital.
The club, sponsored by the Seaford Kiwanis, includes more than 50 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades who work on projects throughout the year that focus on helping the community. With October being cancer awareness month, the students, in an effort to take a stand against cancer, designed and sold pink T-shirts that the school wore Oct. 30. The students sold 156 T-shirts and collected $1,000 to benefit the Allen Cancer Center in memory of Tara Backus. Backus was a math teacher who taught at the Seaford Middle School and Central Elementary who passed away after her battle with cancer.
Builders Club is an international student-led organization sponsored by the Kiwanis International and is the largest service organization for middle school and junior high students, with more than 45,000 members worldwide. Members learn to work together and develop servant-leaders skills as they serve their school and community.
