The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays is seeking volunteers to assist with the 2019 Inshore Fish and Blue Crab Survey.
A volunteer orientation will be held at 5 p.m. March 18 at the Center for the Inland Bays office, 39375 Inlet Road, Rehoboth Beach, on the north side of the Indian River Inlet.
Since 2011, volunteers have been pulling seine nets, counting and measuring fish, collecting water samples and recording data at 16 survey sites along the shores of Rehoboth, Indian River and Little Assawoman Bays. Each team conducts surveys once per month from April through October. This citizen science effort will reveal trends in fish populations in the Inland Bays. This is an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to explore the bays.
No prior scientific experience is necessary, and new volunteers are encouraged to participate. Attendance at the orientation meeting is highly recommended, especially for those who are new to the program. An introduction to the survey, safety information and team assignments are included. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, but anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
RSVP by email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone to 226-8105, ext. 112.
