Each summer, the small town of Roxana, Del.  hosts two of the premier softball world series events, the Big League World Series and Senior League World Series.

The Senior League World Series makes its 14th straight appearance at Roxana, while the Big League World Series will be hosted at the Pyle Center at Lower Sussex Little League for the fourth year.

Each tournament features talent from across the globe, as teams from the several countries even as far as China will participate.

The popularity of the tournament has risen in recent years, as they often draw more spectators throughout the week than live in the town of Roxana as a whole.

“We’re finding more and more people are planning their vacation around the tournament,” said tournament director Martin Donovan. “They’ll come down and go to the beach during the day and come out to the games at night, it’s developed a good following.”

After several years of putting on both tournaments, the crew at Roxana has setting things up down to a science. Aside from the hiccups that may come with an event of this magnitude, the tournaments usually run smoothly.

“The tournament itself pretty much runs itself once it gets started,” said tournament director Martin Donovan. “There’s always something different each year that pops up, but we’re always prepared.”

This year’s tournaments will have some changes, however, both within the structure of how the tournament is run and some of the teams that will compete.

“The big chance is in pool play, we usually take the top two teams from each pool but now we’re the top four teams will advance,” said Donovan. “We’ll also have our first team ever competing from mainland China, which we’re excited about.”

The ESPN network broadcasts the championship rounds each year from Roxana and that tradition will continue next week. Four games in next Saturday’s championship round will be broadcasted on ESPN 3, a online streaming ESPN option, while Sunday’s games will be broadcasted on ESPN 2.

The Big League Softball World Series consists of two pools of five teams each. In Pool A, Asia Pacific, Canada, US Central, US Southeast and US West will do battle. Meanwhile, Pool B features US East, Latin America, US Southwest, Europe-Africa and host team Delaware District 3.

Four teams from each pool will advance to the championship round which will be single elimination.
