Amazon delivery station to open in Seaford this May, set to bring 'hundreds' of jobs
The world's largest online retailer is opening a delivery station in Seaford.
Amazon will occupy about half of the 208,000-square-foot warehouse at 1700 Dulaney Street starting this May, according to Salisbury brokerage NAI Coastal.
"Hundreds" of full- and part-time jobs are expected at the delivery station, NAI Coastal said. The Dulaney Street warehouse includes parking for over 550 cars.
It's fitting that the warehouse used to be a DuPont shipping hub, according to Seaford Mayor David Genshaw.
"DuPont built those warehouses and was such an important part of Seaford, Sussex and really the Lower Shore's employment opportunities, so it's really kind of interesting," Genshaw said.
Seaford was a DuPont Co. town for decades. Thousands worked at the company that made the town "The Nylon Capital of the World," until it started downsizing in the 1980s. The company's eventual exit devastated the local economy with effects that are still felt today, and Amazon could be an important part of Seaford's continuing recovery.
In another DuPont connection, Invista occupies another portion of the warehouse Amazon will move into. DuPont sold Invista, its synthetic fibers division, to Koch Industries in 2003.
Another portion of the warehouse remains available, according to NAI Coastal's Brad Gillis.
“Sussex County is in the midst of experiencing rapid, widespread residential and commercial growth,” Gillis said. “Amazon’s establishment of a physical presence on the Delmarva Peninsula signals the community’s continued development alongside its population.”
Amazon already operates locations in Delaware in New Castle, Middletown and Wilmington. Genshaw said Seaford's central location contributed to Amazon's decision to open its doors there.
"It's a logistically perfect place," he said.
Amazon's minimum wage starts at $15 per hour, but the global tech giant's most recent news headlines are about its opposition to Bessemer, Alabama, employees' attempts to unionize.
