The 11th Annual Lewes Tulip Celebration, originally scheduled for April 3-12, has had to scale back most of the activities associated with the event to be in compliance with the most recent Centers for Disease Control recommendations for large events and gatherings related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lewes Chamber of Commerce announced March 19.

Activities that had to be cancelled are the photography contest and exhibition; Tulip Trolley Tours on April 4 and 11; plant and flower sales by Lewes in Bloom on April 10-11; and the inaugural children’s photography exhibition.

As of March 19, the floral demonstrations — set for 11 to 11:30 a.m. April 3 at Flowers by Mayumi, 128 Second St., and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 4 and 11 at Floral Inspirations, 524 E. Savannah Road — will take place as scheduled, unless further restrictions are announced. The Cape Artists plan to be painting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 4 in Zwaanendael Park, depending on the weather.

Visiting the outdoor tulip plantings individually and in small groups is within the CDC guidelines. A free map that lists the parks and public spaces where the 23,000 bulbs were planted last fall by volunteers from Lewes in Bloom is available in the brochure box outside the Lewes Chamber of Commerce visitor center, located in the historic Fisher-Martin House, 120 Kings Highway in Zwaanendael Park.

In previous years, the map included a raffle card drawing with gift certificates provided by Lewes Chamber member businesses located in the historic business district and across the canal bridge. Because many of those businesses are closed by the pandemic, they are not listed on the map this year and there is not a raffle card drawing.

The visitor center is temporarily closed due to the pandemic although chamber staff is available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays to answer phone calls, supply brochures and offer visitor information, at 645-8073.

The 52nd Great Delaware Kite Festival, originally set for April 10 at Cape Henlopen State Park, has been canceled this year to comply with CDC recommendations. It will not be rescheduled for a later date this year.

The 25th Anniversary British Motorcar Show, originally set for May 2, has also been cancelled. It will not be rescheduled in 2020.
